EP Raps Spanish Police Action over Incidents at Portuguese-Spanish Border
The European Parliament (EP) condemned today, in Strasbourg, the action by the Spanish police authorities who stopped a Portuguese group from going on to Seville, on 22 June. to join the free manifestations, in keeping with the European Council.
The EP "condemns the actions by the Spanish authorities who prevented a group of Portuguese citizens, including a member of Parliament from crossing the border to take part in an authorized demonstration in Seville, in keeping with the European Council", the document reads.
"The action is contrary to the principles of fundamental liberty expressed in the Treaty and which are essential elements of European citizenship", it adds.
The issue came about as a result of several clarification requests by the Socialist MP Carlos Lage and the Communist MP Ilda Figueiredo, who succeeded in directly challenging the Spanish Prime Primister, José Maria Aznar, and the EP President, Pat Cox, during the debate on the outcome of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union (EU), which took place on Tuesday.
Explanatory requests were also aimed at the Spanish PM by the the President of the European Socialist Party Group, Enrique Barón Crespo, and by the Representative of the European Unitary Leftist Group, Salvador Jové Peres, without receiving a single reply.
Comment:The decision by the Spanish PM has only served to justify Portuguese claims that the Spanish government through its Guardia Civil, took unprovoked and illegal action towards Portuguese citizens, including physical assault against one Portuguese MP, which caused uproar in Portugal, and strong press criticism. The Portuguese government of Durão Barroso has also not escaped huge political and public criticism for its conciliatory stance, because of its so-called "good Spanish-Portuguese relations". - Rui da Silva
