Grupo dos Amigos de Olivença Demand Intervention by Government Institutions of Sovereignty

In consequence of the detention of some members of the Grupo dos Amigos de Olivença (GAO), in Cáceres, Spain, when they proceeded to hand out to journalists an "Open Letter" intended for the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the European Union, the leadership of that Association have sent to all institutions of sovereignty and to the political parties represented in Parliament, an account regarding the events on 9 February.

In the letter, GAO denounces "the unjustifiable, unqualifiable and unacceptable way", that those citizens were detained, for about an hour, by the Spanish "National Police", and relate the shame and humiliation to which their associates were subjected who"had to remain turned towards the wall, with their arms in the air, as though they were dangerous criminals, and prevented from contacting anyone else and also personally insulted"

The Amigos de Olivença have demanded " that the Portuguese authorities express an unmistakable, clear and absolute repudiation as to the Spanish authorities' conduct, who displaying a shameless contempt for European Judicial Law, demonstrated their denial to Portuguese citizens of the most elementary and recognised rights of citizenship, equally showing a disgraceful lack of consideration towards Portugal, a Sovereign, Free, Independent country"

Having been prevented from doing so in Cáceres, GAO will take the "Open Letter " to the Ministers of Forteign Affairs of the EU, through their diplomatic representatives in Lisbon and Madrid which draws attention to the Olivença Dispute that in its view represents "an unacceptable affront to International Rights"

GAO intends, also, to expose the incident to the organisations of the European Union and will seek out the possibility of petitioning the intervention of the Portuguese Solicitors Association in response to the treatment that Spanish police gave to a member of their Association."
