Dispute of Olivença Interferes with Alqueva
Spain may take proceedings against Portugal
The clearing of "azinheiras" in Olivença integrated into the plan of deforestation for the lake being created by the Alqueva dam in Portugal is causing problems between Portuguese and Spanish authorities.
EDIA, the Alqueva Development & Infra-structures Company might be notified by the Spanish authorities, through the Extremadura Office for the Environment, of illegally clearing 50 hectares of "azinheiras" in Olivença, beyond level 139.
Carlos Silva of EDIA said to Expresso Online (Portugal) that his company "had not been officially notified, but admitted that contacts had taken place with the Spanish authorities to clarify the application for the planned clearance in the Olivença area"
"There was an onsite meeting from which resulted an action project", revealed Carlos Silva.
According to EDIA's man in charge, during the meeting the question of clearing the trees was discussed only up to level 139, but an action plan was never signed, and as a result "there isn't any agreement between Portugal and Spain"
EDIA will continue with the clearance up to level 152 and with the tree cutting to 150 on national (sic) territory. The clearance of trees in Olivença is now suspended. EDIA is going to "wait for the next meeting" of the coordinating Portuguese-Spanish commisison for Alqueva problems in order for the situation to become "clearer"
Carlos Silva explained also that EDIA is only a part of the commission, with the Water Institute presiding over the organisation, and therefore it is responsible for any future agreement.
