EU Foreign Affairs Ministers Summit Told of Spain's Skeleton in the Cupboard

At a meeting in Cáceres (Spain) of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on 9 February, the Spanish Presidency honoured the participants with the most distinct delicacies and wines of Extremadura.

At dinner, held at the Castelo de la Arguijuela, those responsible for the diplomacy of the 15 member-states of the European Union, they toasted with a typical sweet: 'Técul-Mécula, a dessert of Alentejan (Portugal) origin that has resisted Spanish occupation and has lasted for 200 years.

Before lunch, though, at about 10am, a Delegation of GAO (Grupo dos Amigos de Olivença), reminded them of the bitter Question of Olivença, a 'skeleton' that Spain would prefer to be kept hidden in the cupboard.

Right by the San Francisco Cultural Complex, an 'Open Letter' was handed out "regarding the illegal occupation of the Portuguese territory of Olivença by the Spanish State", a situation which, is being requested the intervention of the European Diplomacy. The 'Open Letter' was accompanied by a Communiqué to the people of Europe, calling for the attention of Public Opinion to what it considers to be a "clamorous" injustice.
