POPULATION OF OLIVENÇA IS UP

Avenue of St Anthony (now 'Spain')

Against the Extremadura trend, the population of Olivença went up last year by 1.2%, according to figures released by the Spanish INE, whilst in the province of Extremadura, in which Olivença is now integrated, it lost 2,751 people, about 0.4%.

In line with the 2000 revision, now published, of the 163 local authorities, 122 were lower, 3 the same, and only 38 were slightly up.

Badajoz, a city which is showing great prosperity, lost 477 people, while Olivença gained 124, the equivalent of 30 new families of 4 members each. Overall, only Villanueva de la Serena grew more than Olivença, up by 158 people. Zafra was up by 99 and Mérida 91.

In an interview about these figures, the President of GAO affirmed that "although we do not have all the information for the motives leading to the population growth in Olivença, it's perfectly right to think that one of the possible reasons for this relates to the process of transmigration of the Spanish population to this juridically Portuguese location which has occurred in the last few years with the purpose of diluting and make disappear the already much bled dry remaining Portuguese."

The President of GAO reminded that this was the objective that Olivença was constituted as a district, covering various towns that did not belong to historically Portuguese territory, so as to turn itself into an atractive point for people from Spain. Humberto de Oliveira added other facts which prove the "colonising purpose" such as the creation of the Industrial Park of Olivença, and the building of residential estates for the Spanish population, so as to see off "the total submerssion of Olivença by a foreign human mass with which the Madrid government seeks to legitimise and perpetuate its occupation".
